Kjölur reopened for summer

4×4 Mantra enjoying the view over Hvitarvatn to Langjökull. 24.05.2019

Kjölur highland road F35 was partly reopened recently and Best Travel took the chance to extend the Golden Circle daytour to have a fantastic view over Hvitarvatn and to be closer to Langjökull glacier.

Our 4×4 Mantra is absolutely ready for the upcoming season including highland tours. It’s seldom highland roads open before June, somewhen they were closed until July. It depends all on weather and snow laying. During May it was forbidden by law to drive the officially closed roads as the ground is defreezing. But Iceland got a very good weather during May and this gave the chance to open Kjalvegur (Kjölur), meanwhile all the way to road no 1 up North, F208 from Hrauneyjar to Landmannalaugar and F26 up North from Godafoss to Aldeyjarfoss. If you have in mind to visit the highlands please check the website of Vegagerdin and respect the roads that are still closed as nature is delicate and a drive over wet tracks leads to heavy damages.
